His father was killed in a S...more The first book in a planned trilogy, The Golden Door is fast-paced fantasy for younger or reluctant readers. Rye is the youngest of three brothers from the town of Weld, which is completely encircled by a high, high wall. His father was killed in a Skimmer (leathery-winged, needle-toothed creature that come in the night) attack, while his two brothers have disappeared outside of the wall while hunting for the source of the Skimmers. When Rye and his mother have to petition the Keeper for help, they are separated. Instead of going to the Welds Center to work in the fields, Rye goes through the door marked, "Volunteers." He knows he is volunteering to follow his brothers into the unknown wilds beyond the wall, to risk being devoured by Skimmers in the night, possibly to never see his home or mother again. But Rye cannot live any longer without knowing what happened to his brothers, so he swallows his fear, meets an unlikely traveling companion, and plunges through the golden door...directly into a destiny he does not understand, but cannot avoid.

Full of action, not overly burdened with descriptive details, nothing morally challenging a la the Chaos Walking series, the good guys are good, the bad guys bad, and the path to success is clear.

The Golden Door, it's a really amazing book. Reviews say that it's for 8-12 year olds, but anyone can read it. It's a really enjoyable book. The beginning is kind of confusing, so you have to pay attention. The author doesn't really give any time to explain everything. She just throws the beginning at you. The first couple of pages might be a little boring, but if you give it a chance, you might become a part of the story. I stayed up all night to finish the book, that's how good it is. The title got me because I was wondering if it would turn your whole life around, depending on what door you chose. I guess it did for Rye. I'm not going to spoil it because it's such a good book. It's going to be the next Harry Potter (even though I'm not a fan of the books/movies).(less)
