"Someone recommended this book as chance to see how good Melville wrote before Hawthorne ruined him. Can't say I agree. While the adventure is fine and the exact descriptions of people & place are engaging, the relationships lack the depth to maintain the engagement." — Dec 27, 2012 03:32pm

"Although I did not experience the L-R problem associated with sketching the ambiguous face-chalice figure on p. 50, I do find myself agreeing with the premise that a "cognitive shift" does help my sketching. I'd done the exercise in Chapter 4 of sketching Picasso's "Portrait of Igor Stravinsky," so I substituted a Ralph Steadman sketch of Freud, and the exercise worked again." — Jun 08, 2012 10:13am

Pylon

| I picked up Pylon because Hemingway said the novel captured aviation so well that he couldn't top it. Faulkner does capture the barnstorming spirit of aviation that included crashes. "[T]rying to make his living out of the air," the pilot risks a gra...more | |

Other Weapons

recommended to Brandon by:
Terry Hertzler
recommended for: human rights activists, readers of Latin American literature

|
|
The short stories in Luisa Valenzuela's Other Weapons are dark romances, nearly a kind of Latin American film noir in which the revolution replaces the domestic SoCal backdrop. The politics of Valenzuela's heroines seem to serve as metaphors for the...more |

read in June, 2011

|
| While much has been made about configurations of gender in the novels of Louise Erdrich, Last Report of Miracles from Little No Horse (LRMLNH) transcends earlier accomplishments from The Beet Queen and The Antelope Wife. The unifying aspect of sex be...more | |
