You'd better really love food to enjoy Gourmet Rhapsody. One long description of shell fish nearly did me in, but I'm glad I stuck with it.

Monsieur Pierre Arthens, a food critic in Paris, is dying, and he's trying to think of a particular flavor he's been craving on his last day. The book is made up of a series of vignettes, some quite short, narrated by the people (and animals) in his life. A lot of people, including family members, didn't care for him at all. His cat loves him, though, and the short chapter where we hear from the cat is lovely. Neither, Monsieur Arthens nor his cat had self-esteem issues, apparently.

Stephanie Kallos writes characters so well that you want to know them, despite their foibles and flaws. The story of a family over the course of time, the book give you an insight into the effects of tragedies (of various kinds) on the individuals involved. I wait for every new Kate Atkinson book with great anticipation. I never would've predicted that I'd love a book that I can classify only as "literary crime", but they're great mysteries with a wonderful character uniting the books.
