Although this was not as captivating as I've found other works by Murakami, this was still a good, quick read. This does not have any of the magical realism that I love in many of Murakami's other novels. I was disappointed that there wasn't more of a sense of magic / altered reality in the descriptions of some of the seriously mentally ill people.

The story takes place over the span of a year in 1969; the narrator is 19 going on 20. The relationships are incredibly frustrating and brought back a flood of memories of relationships at that stage in my life.
