If recommending books to people who will be left high and dry with the WGA strike and end of new TV, this one would be at the top of my list. It's the definition of enjoyable reading that doesn't pander or overtax the brain. Just right. The often mentioned plural first narrative is really smooth and felt wholly original. I wasn't as moved by Lynn's storyline as I was by the fleeting glimpses of peripheral characters' lives. I think the National Book aware nomination was deserving (not that Ferris was lacking positive press), but I'm glad that Denis Johnson won out. ...less

After all the liberally-sprinkled Spanish, I think I only absorbed "hermano" and "tia." I paused every page or so and thought, "Should I just go to an English-Spanish site and plug these sentences in?" or "Am I missing something not knowing the Spanish?" I loved Drown and loved reading Oscar Wao. The footnotes were more entertaining that David Foster Wallace-y. The ending wasn't what I was hoping for, but 15 not-so-great pages didn't ruin the novel's overall positive impact. Remembered that I'd read a chapter (Lola's story) excerpted in the Spring Fiction New Yorker and absolutely loved it. So glad I got to read more about this world....less
