I love Hawthorne's mood, and he writes some incredibly heartbreaking sentences, even though his stories don't necessarily always go where I really want them to. I'm quite partial to this one, as we reproduced a really beautiful wallpaper for the actual House of Seven Gables in Salem, Mass. I figured it was about time I got around to actually reading this, considering how much I love so many things that have been derived from it, but it ain't an easy read... not because of the challenging quality of the text (I wish), but because so much of it is just incredibly freaking pointless and extraneous... there are all these random chorus bits with huge casts of inexplicable extras that I just keep picturing as lame musical productions, and every time I get to another one I just want to cry. Or stop reading. Even with about 3/4 of the text removed, it would still probably be lamer than I thought it would be. Oh well.
