When I started to read PoS, I didn't especially like Ista, I felt she let the others influence and take control of her life to much and it was so unlike my perception of Bujold's characters so far it made me not liking her instantly. Her main characters are usually more self-sufficient which I respect a lot.
But as the book went along, I also cane up with the term of depression, whether it was caused by the curse or not, and since I know it is not something a person can control, I stopped resenting that, and started to like her, just because she WAS so different than other Bujold's characters.
And the angry part, I think is equally angry at the world and at herself, for letting everything slip from her control, and there comes the guilt. One other problem: she is a smart woman, and she does know she can't influence everything, but some things she can. And that makes her feel even more guilty because she did not do the things she could... like take care of her children more, or not let the curse consume all parts of her life...

Either way, it would be nice to have some kind of device to help find THE passage you are looking for. But I agree, the smell of a book is something I would miss in an e-book reader.
I remember one antique book shop in Zagreb a couple of years ago. It smelled of old books, and dusty paper, Norah Jones was playing on the radio, the light was yellow, coming from a single window. It had two floors, one in the attic, and was full of old books and magazines. I remember thinking I could live there... Heaven, I tell you. :)))
I do read on my computer, but I agree, it is tiring for the eyes. But I still wouldn't mind an e-book reader...especially if it came as a gift! ;)

It's in a horrible state, I really should buy it new. :) Nah, I like it the way it is.
Same with Tarzan, I had old, old copies, my uncle's, I think... THOSE I borrowed to someone, I still can't remember who, and they are gone. :( Now my husband keeps a meticulous record on his computer, so I hope that won't happen again.
