This second book in the series continues to deliver with a supernatural mystery centered in Chicago. This one is based on werewolves ("there, there wolves") - and several different varieties of them to keep things interesting.

It also provides more hints and little details of Harry Dresden's past, and starts to more firmly lay down the story arches that will undoubtedly unfold over the course of the series. It continues with Butcher's sarcasm and dry wit, and attention to detail with good pacing and smooth readability.

However, with book 2 he is already beginning to show signs of resorting to being formulaic. Some reviews of later books complain of these issues, so I'm guessing it only gets worse from here. But as long as he stays creative and keeps spilling more light on Harry's backstory, I think it will be worth it to keep reading.

This is our introduction to Harry Dresden, a wizard working as a private investigator in Chicago. Think of it as an adult take on Harry Potter meets a crime drama with a bit of a noir-bent.

The magic-side of the story is not very heavy-handed, and he colors it with well-developed characters that jump off the page. Anyone familiar with Chicago will enjoy the little nods here and there, and the humor is worked in well.

This particular story carries interest well to boot, and keeps you guessing about how it will resolve right up to the end. For anyone interested in the fantasy / mystery genre, I highly recommend this book and (from what I have read so far) the series as a whole.

i was given this book as a gift in high school. it was a first foray into British humor (other than Hitchiker's Guide) ... definitely a worthwhile read if you like the dry wit.

i do plan to re-read it, i remember so little at this point. neil gaiman is a very good writer though, and many of his solo works are worth reading. dunno much about terry pratchett.
