This is the book that made me fall in love with Joyce Carol Oates. This book follows the course of a family through the generations and was the book that helped me realize that I was doomed to a life like my mother's (and my grandmother's) unless I started paying attention! The cycle of life poorly lived is so clearly detailed. The characters are tragic and easily identified just by looking around you in any depressed area. They may even be in your own family. You don't read Joyce Carol Oates if you want a lift, but you do if you are looking for outstanding writing and intriguing stories. ...less

Loved it, loved the series, sad to see it end, but I'll probably start reading them all over again. I like to read series books in order, and it's nearly 10 years since I read the Sorcerer's Stone. I have great admiration for J.K. Rowling, as she created a world that was totally absorbing and a great place to visit every time. Terrific characters, compelling stories, and truly creepy villians. ...less

I liked this book so much that, after listening to it on tape, read by the author, I went out and bought a hard copy and read it again. The author goes through a traumatic divorce, and then goes on a transformative journey to Italy (eating), India (praying), and Indonesia (love). The author can come off as a bit of a whiner at times, but overall it's a joyous romp and she's great fun with whom to travel. ...less

I just finished reading Children of Men. It was kind of depressing, I thought. Overall, I found the writing compelling, but I guess I'm just not a big fan of science fiction. I found the whole concept interesting of how the culture adapted to the idea of no more children being born, but the view of the world from P.D.James perspective was just so damn pessimistic. I don't want to believe the world would be so cold. Did not see the ending coming. ...less

The thing I liked best about this book is that the author explores how a character, who makes a very risky decision in terms of her sister's health, may be the only character in the story who understands the whole picture. I like the way the author takes unpopular positions and makes the reader question his or her original feelings. I did not like the ending, which I thought cheapened the flow of the novel, but I won't spoil it for you....less

William Least Heat Moon gets this idea that he might find the Northwest Passage, plans the whole trip out, and then sets out to do it with a special boat, a good friend, and a group of people watching out for them and helping out when needed. This book was chosen by the community in which I work last summer, and I never got around to reading it. The world Paul Farmer inhabits is unlike anything I know: he has a clinic in Haiti, where he is trying valiantly to cure TB, and other life giving projects for the poor around the world. Meanwhile, he works in a Boston hospital and teaches at Harvard. I was exhausted just reading about his activities as Tracy Kidder traveled with him. It is a real eye opener....less

The author's husband drops dead on page one and the rest of the book deals with how she finds her life so completely changed in an instant. This is a book that finds an ordinary man unexpectedly at an exrarordinary moment in his life. When he makes a decision that will color everything else that follows, the reader may hate him and feel justified in doing so. The author then uses the rest of the book to help the reader understand and empathize, but also to see the ripples that long ago decision made in everyone's life around this character. Everytime you think you know where this book is going the author takes you somewhere else....less
