I can't say it deserves more than three stars (maybe I will up that when/if I read the next in the series), but I wasn't disappointed. Not enthralled, but it takes a lot for me. ;)

A quick soundbite: Michael Moorcock fans will find a junior lite inspired tale here. Other (possibly younger) fans, unfamiliar with his works and in the mood for some fun adventurey sci fi, would do well to read this. (and some Moorcock!)

I think I wasn't so in the teen book mood, reading "Mistborn" and "Jonathon Strange" at the same time.... My bad.

I loved this, but can fairly give three stars. My reasons: Susan Cooper is just so incredible, and I'd rather rate her against her Dark Is Rising series here. So, on a scale of 1-5 in Cooper-tastic ness, three. Three and a half. ;) Magic abounds here. I love Cooper's turn of a word; she makes the craft of writing seem easy and elegant, without spoiling the effect of an 11-year old narrator. There's a bit of borrowing from Shakespeare in Love (?)(although a re-imagining of the Bard is not new to film or book) and I have to say that although I liked the ending, I felt that this whole thing would make an excellent play. Which is appropriate here, and did happen in 2005 in NY. So, an excellent intro or re-intro (for adult or older readers) to the magic of Shakespeare. I also laugh at this cover.... skateboarding? Nat? Um, okay. ;)

PS On further reflection (this post script is from 4 months later)I find myself thinking about key scenes in this book rather often. Really well written stuff, that sticks in the mind. Now I want to watch this in some format. It is heavy. That said- I managed to hold it, and lug it around for just about a week. I had to limit myself to trying to read most of this on breaks at work- sounds insane, I know- but I couldn't put this down at home. Didn't work, of course, but I got some slack cut for me when I was sick with a sinus infection, and therefore not that fun to be around anyway. Thus, left to my own devices and... to "Under the Dome". Mwa haha, thanks, nasal problems!

What can I say about this book? Will it suffice that after reading, I feel like, no- I know- I would not want to be stuck under a dome? For any amount of time? Under any circumstances? Because I have to say, this described to me some pretty good examples of humans and human behavior gone totally awry, amidst stalwart acts of goodness, compassion,etc. Which were, shall we say, in the minority... under The Dome.

It doesn't quite get five stars. No matter how much I wanted to get through the story. Or how much description there was that it felt like the air where I was got a little more stifled as well.

Each King book I read makes it that much more fun to be a reader. Of all books. I enjoyed "Under the Dome" ...and recommend the e-book version to commuters.

I grabbed the "free:read me" copy of this that sat on the break room table, and can proudly attribute it's awesomeness to my returning from several breaks 10-15 minutes late. I am a pretty punctual break taker, and I could not put this down. I dunno how Sanderson does it- well written characters? Atmospheric setting? Sci Fi mysteriousness? Check, check, check. It must be all of this, and more.

Why, I liked it so much I would hire him to, let's see, write the end of a beloved epic fantasy series that was in the works but not quite finished. Yup. That's what I would do.
