A.J. Jacobs decides to live "by the Book" for one year. He follows Bibical rules as closely as possible, but avoids harming himself and others. The book is written in a journal/diary style, with entries bi-daily, which got a little repetitive and long-winded after awhile. Jacobs writes with an enthusiastic and upbeat tone and is quite likable. Set during the civil rights era in Jackson, Mississippi, this novel is narrated by three different women: Aibileen and Minny, who work as black maids for white women, and Skeeter (Eugenia) a white, young, aspiring journalist. Skeeter decides to write a book revealing what it is like to work as a colored maid for a white Southern women, and she relies on Minny and Aibileen to interview and find other maids to interview.
