I loved The Dangerous Days of Daniel X (book 1), but was disappointed in Watch the Skies, for many of the reasons you listed.

The series has a lot of potential, but I can't help wondering how much James Patterson is actually involved with the writing. The only series I've read that (at least in my opinion) successfully used multiple authors writing in worlds created by someone else were books expanding the universes of Star Wars, Star Trek and Indiana Jones. And even those suffered the occasional book that left me with the "what were they thinking?" feeling about how the author twisted the creator's view.
