So far, I am little confused as to the objective of this experiment. It seemed that it came out of all the "stuff" she and her partner have accumulated and all the shopping that is done at Christmas time. So why then was she torn about donating $5 to charity dinner? She also doesn't seem to have much discretion when it comes to food.

I remained confused throughout the book as to what the author's purpose of the experiment was. At one point she stated that it wasn't about saving money. The title of the book implys that she will forgo shopping for an entire year but I wouldn't include dinners at restaurants or movies shopping.
