I was enjoying the first 50 or so pagse, but then I left it on a bus in the Czech Republic... Guess I´ll have to wait until I get back to the land of well-stocked English libraries.

Candide and Zadig were great. Didn't really make it through many of the other stories, as they were along very similar lines.

If you find the goodreads.com description of this book at all compelling, definitely pick it up. Creative in both style and content, it's well worth a read. I heard Viggo Mortensen will star in the film version, which has the potential to be awesome.

I was surprised how much the plot of the book differed from the film (which I saw first). They are dramatically different. For example, in the book the pregnant woman was not a black immigrant, nor is there any trip to the Isle of Wight prison camp (effectively the last chunk of the movie). The endings are completely different. And while the central "a man without hope finds it" theme is found in both, I'd say the running commentary on immigration in the film is almost nowhere to be found in the book, while the prominent commentary on aging and suicide in the book wasn't featured at all prominently in the film. Worth your while if you have some time to kill, I suppose.

I'd give it 3.5 if I could. I think a lot of the edge has been taken off by the collapse of the Soviet Union, which negates one of the central tension-heightening elements of the story. Still, and enjoyable read that, in places, goes a little deeper than expected.
