This book is a compilation of fictinal letter between an author and her new friends on the Channel Island of Guernsey. The island was conquered and occupied for the majority of WWII by the Germans although it was and is now a British Crown Dependency. The Occupation greatly shaped the lives of the people on the Island. The story is set shortly after the war when most of the world and all of Europe were still reeling from the trauma.
It is an absolute delight to read. The characters are developed in such a fun way and the correspondence and their stories are so easy to enjoy. As you get consumed by their world, you begin to think of them more as friends then fictional character.
The story also provided a lot of insight about suffering during WWII which surprised me since it felt like such a light hearted book. The details about the war and specifically the occupation of Guernsey were very carefully researched.
