"I am over a third of a way through the stories in this book and I'm not sure it is my cup of tea. The stories have a bleakness in them that is hard to stomach. There is a perhaps a (recent?) trend in praising incredibly dire media for its gritty, bleak, and "realistic" portrayal of life. Here's the thing...I live in this world too and I don't need books to reinforce this. I need hope. And dragons:-)" Jul 24, 2016 01:31PM

Robert Jordan
“I'm only an old gleeeman,' he said from the door. 'Who could I possibly be dangerous to?”
Robert Jordan, The Great Hunt

Lloyd Alexander
“Most of us are called on to perform tasks far beyond what we can do. Our capabilities seldom match our aspirations, and we are often woefully unprepared. To this extent, we are all Assistant Pig-Keepers at heart.”
Lloyd Alexander, The Book of Three

Louise Erdrich
“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won't either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could.”
Louise Erdrich, The Painted Drum

John Connolly
“I'm a ghost," said the small figure, then added, a little uncertainly, "Boo?”
John Connolly, The Gates

Michael Buckley
“I didn't do it,' he insisted.
'Then why did you run?' Sabrina asked.
'And send rabbits to eat us! I'm a seven-year-old girl,' Daphne said. 'Do you know how important bunny rabbits are to me?”
Michael Buckley, The Unusual Suspects
