One of the first true fantasy books that I can remember reading was Elfgift, and I believe it is this that got me hooked on the type of books I now read today.
Though I wouldn't call it fantastic in the greatest of senses, Elfgift is something you can get hooked on quickly and unlike many books today the characters have substance to them.
