This book has reminded me what an influence Julia Child had on me when I was younger. Probably very similar to the influence that Martha Stewart had years later. It reminded me of the very first time I ever tried to follow several of her recipes--to impress a date! I had had lots of experience cooking for my family when I was growing up, while my mother was taking college classes. It never occured to me, that if I followed the recipe, it might not turn out.

I started this book this summer, but I got stalled. It was very difficult to follow. The main character is dying and her thoughts keep floating in and out of the past. I recently viewed the DVD of the film that was based on the book, and now I may be able to go back and understand what is going better.

It is absolutely amazing to me that there is no such thing as Lace Reading. The Barry Brunonia has so completely detailed the art of lace reading in this book that I was convinced it was a true craft. A great mystery!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I finished it about a week before the movie came out. I usually like books more than the movie, but this was the exception. The book almost ignores Julia Child's life, and the movie splits between/parralels Julie's and Julia's lives.

This was the second time I read this book. I didn't remember the plot but I did remember enjoying the book the first time. When I read it this time I was amazed that I liked it the first time. It was so much easier to relate to as a reader of a "certain age".

A quick read. The first few chapters reminded me of my students who always want to speak in infinitives. I am very tempted to copy a chapter and show it to them, so they know how they sound when they refuse to conjugate their verbs.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ken Follett was one of my favorite reads in the 80's-good spy novels, but I never tried this one because it was set in the Middle Ages. This novel gave me such an appreciation for the cathedrals and castles I saw when I was visiting my daughter in England.

Easy read. Good summer beach read. Starts off as a story about a mother/daughter relationship, but this relationship takes a back seat when the main character developes friendships with the other members of the knitting club. One review called it Steel Magnolia's set in New York. I didn't think it came close to that intense.
