Julia wrote: "No offense, but maybe you could show some sympathy to her. It is a disease after all. She may know it's hurting her and keep going but that doesn't mean she necessarily wants to."

Wow, Julia, there was no need to make this personal. We all see and feel different things when we read a work of fiction, and Kari is perfectly entitled to have felt no sympathy for the main character in this book.

I liked the book, even gave it 4 stars, yet I agree with Kari on some points. The writing style was awful, all those crossed out lines were so annoying and I never did understand what the chapter headings meant until a friend who had suffered from anorexia explained it to me. I also did not sympathize with Lia. The author wrote this character to be fully aware of the harm she was doing to herself and her family and made a decision that she did not want help and did want to continue starving herself. I understand that anorexia is a very serious disease, but Lia chose to become anorexic and chose to continue down a path that she knew would hurt her and the people that loved her. I don't see any way to sympathize with her. I do sympathize with her family for having to watch her suffer because of choices she made.

Please don't criticize Kari for her opinion. That is what Goodreads is all about, for readers to voice their opinions on the books we read in an environment that is safe and open to everyones ideas.
