It would be hard to read Uglies and not follow up with Pretties. The sequel drives home the point that government can get away with terrible things when people start to allow someone to do their thinking for them. Who really is in charge? Take home message: we need to make conscious choices and be involved in what is going on around us, because what we don't know or are not aware of can hurt us. It is scary. The world of these novels seems to be the world we would have chosen if we had not fought for our agency in the preexistance. Animals live by instinct and do what they do, and are not accountable. That is how the people in this society live. They are innocent, because they don't have the ability to choose. Except that it is possible to regain that ability to choose. It is worth fighting for.

I enjoyed this book. It makes a statement about how we live in the world, individuality, social responsibility, etc. It was actually a couple of weeks ago that I read it, and I read it quickly as the story was enticing, and it felt like it was saying something important, but now I am losing track of what that message was. The main thing was that government can get out of control and take away individuality and free will if people don't watch what is happening. And some people prefer it that way, which is sad.

This is another book not to be read straight through. It has promise, and I want to take my time and use what I learn from it.
