As a fan of fairy tales, it's nice to find a book that uses the traditional conventions without repeating the same stories told time and time again. Totally refreshing and enjoyable.

I am a Crazy Cat Lady. And because of that, a friend gave me the entire Warrior box set as a Christmas present one year.

And I started the first one. And I tried to find the adventure/excitement/pleasure in the story, but all I could think was "A bunch of cats running around the woods? Well, their life spans are a year or less. And I bet none of them have been spayed/neutered, so there's going to be litter after litter of unwanted feral kittens out there. And what will Rusty's 'twolegs' think when they discover he's run away? How many weeks will they stand on their front porch, putting food out and calling his name? Is there a small child crying now because he lost his pet? What kind of crap IS THIS???"

Needless to say, I was too upset to finish. Eventually, I gave the box set away to a woman who wanted to give them to her daughter as a gift. And I felt really guilty for perpetuating the madness.

The book in this series are as formulaic as an episode of Law and Order, but like the aforementioned show, they're comfortable entertainment when you're not looking for something too deep or too fluffy.

Not the best in the series and I did miss Suzie Shooter, but Dead Boy was a fun character.

The Plague Tales is comprised of two distinct narratives; one set in the 1300s, about a Jewish doctor charged with keeping the English royal family safe from the Bubonic Plague and the other set in the future (2005!), as an forensic archeologist unwittingly releases the ancient bacteria.

While Alejandro, the Jewish doctor’s story is engaging, the futuristic story falls flat. Janie, the forensic archeologist, is shrewish, selfish, and shortsighted. Ann Benson would have been better served dumping her entirely and writing a full-length novel about Alejandro.
