Atmospheric and creepy, although the supernatural aspects aren't the most appealing parts of the story. Waters has created a wonderful glimpse into post-WWII England. She has perfectly captured the death throws of the aristocratic class and what it meant for the country, for better or for worse.

My reaction to Dr. Faraday went back and forth; at times I felt tremendous sympathy for him, other times I loathed him. I admit to loving a good "unreliable narrator."

I can see the ambiguous ending leaving many folks unsatisfied. In fact, I'm not sure myself if I liked it or hated it. My personal interpretation: It was the doctor all along.

"The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed."

I'd heard this first line referenced many, many times before I had even bothered learning what The Gunslinger was about. I figured, even as I picked up the book, that it couldn't live up to its own hype.

I was wrong and I was right.

The book is amazing and should be thrust at anyone who claims Stephen King is a hack. Roland is definitely one of King's most realized characters and I hate him just as much as I love and admire him. Jake is the angel on Roland's shoulder while Flagg is the devil and their pull on him is strong.

The disappointment comes from passages that seem out of character or out of sync with the world, as if King's plan isn't quite crystal clear. This isn't present in Drawing of the Three or The Waste Land, so perhaps it's an issue of King not being into the rhythm of the world or story yet.

By the by, I strongly recommend the audiobook. That's how I tackled a reread and it's an excellent production.

That this book brilliantly combines science writing, reporting, feature-style writing, personal essay, food writing, middlebrow philosophy and history is no surprise. This is what Michael Pollan does.

What did surprise me though was how utterly devastating yet hopeful yet tragic this book is. Let me note also that this will make neither knee-jerk conservatives or liberals happy. This one is much more crunchy con than anything.

To circle back around to some summary:

1. Corn is used in freakin' everything and there are political and economic forces that made that happen. And what's more the sea of corn that finds it's way in to almost everything Americans eat is supported on a sea of fossil fuels. Talk about not-sustainable.

2. Well it turns out that you can farm smart if you farm holistically, but even that is precarious for a variety of reasons and yes this is another addition to the Polyface farm hagiography, but not only is the farm something to be hagiographic about, but Pollan really digs in to how the thing is run and the science behind it. Really -- if you have even the slightest interest in science writing or nature writing, read this book. Even though you'll have to get through the corn chapters to get to this stuff.

3. Pollan goes foraging for mushrooms and hunts boar and discovers his inner Hemingway even though it kind of freaks him out what with him being a softie liberal. And yet, and yet if you can read this with a measure of charity combined with some pragmatic understanding of human evolution, there's some good stuff to be found. (less)
