This is a masterpiece, and worthy of the high praise and comparisons to classics such as TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.
I loved the voice. I loved the characters. I loved the plot. I love the spots of humor, the achingly deep spots of sorrow.
But I did not love the book.
I didn't realize that until I finished. I didn't feel entirely satisfied with the ending--and I realized that was because what I wanted from the book was what it *wasn't*. I wanted to know more about Celia Foote, more about Mae Mobley, more about Kindra and Sugar and Constantine. Even more about Hilly and Elizabeth. I found myself more intrigued and caught up by the stories of the side characters than the main ones. I didn't disliked the main characters...I was just more curious about the side ones.
And I got caught up with the idea of HELP, the book the women in THE HELP write. I wanted to read *THAT* book, not the fictional account of the creation of it. I know the author did her research and created a fictional account of a story based in very real, vivid details. But. As I was reading the fiction, I found myself truly wanting to read the NONfiction...and that made me care a little less about the fictional characters. I liked THE HELP, but I would have loved HELP. ]]>
