I'm a big fan of Karin Fossum, but this book was not good at all. Clumsy descriptive writing, caricatures instead of characters and plot developments that didn't ring true at all. Not a bad book, although it isn't one of his most plausible. My main issue with Indriðason is that the two running plot lines involving

(a) his junkie daughter and
(b) his dead brother who was lost in the snow

One of the funniest books i've ever read: the encounter with the colonel in the guesthouse TV room on Bill Bryson's first evening in Britain is priceless and his adventures with restaurant speak had me almost falling off my seat i laughed so much (this was on the tube and greeted with some alarm by the other passengers). It is almost hard to believe the affection with which Bryson seems to regard our country. We are so used to criticism that i found myself wondering if it wasn't some sort of an elaborate scam: tell them you love the place and laugh as they buy your books in their droves. A bit sad, i know. My favourite bit of the book is where he discusses the difference between British and American concepts of distance. I walked part of the Lycian Way last year. I took this book with me and found it useful but often confusing.

One reason for this is much of the path that Kate Clow mapped appears to lie on routes which have been earmarked for development into roads. The path is disappearing and with it the landmarks she uses to help you navigate your way.

That said, i did find it useful and i appreciated the way she incorporates Turkish words into the text so that you become familiar with them in context.

The map at the back was moderately useful, but it's hard to use because of the way it's laid out: the different stretches of the way are plotted in segments, so that you have to keep turning the map upside down or over. As there are relatively few landmarks on the map each segment looks quite similar when you first look at it and i wasted quite a bit of time trying to work out which bit i needed. In the end, i mainly relied on my GPS map. ]]>
