After all the horrible reviews, I was thrilled to find someone who agrees with me that this is a moving book. I was starting to doubt my sanity. I was actually expecting a parody (as you said, it may fit the legal definition but not a literary one) but was pleased to find instead a compelling story perhaps based much more on reality that GWTW. This wasn't a exactly a pleasure to read because the history of slavery in the U.S. is painful, but I felt it was a deeply human story. Plus I sincerely cared about many of the characters and that's a major criterion for me in considering whether or not a book is worth my time and energy. I've lived long enough and read enough to no longer hesitate to stop reading a book that doesn't interest me on some level. And in fiction, I have to care about at least one character to continue reading.
