"I hate you! I never want to hear from you nor see you ever again!" Alison's eyes burned red from held back tears.

"You don't know it yet but its better this way, I promise." Z kept his eyes away from making real contact with her.

"Don't throw that bull-'I'm a suffering martyr'-shit at me. This is your own doing!" Z stood awkwardly for a second, "JUST GO!" Her shriek made him jump and he headed for the door.

"I just want you to know if the circumstances were different-"

"Save it for someone who gives a damn Z." Her words were harsh but her tone was empty, she was truly done with him. She waited till she couldn't hear his footsteps anymore. She waited for uncontrollable sobs, nauseousness, or any type of physical ailment but nothing came, she was numb.

The next morning she picked up the paper from her front porch and over the next hour read through it. When she reached the obituaries her heart and throat clenched shut in utter dread. A big picture of Z and his family sat in the middle of the page.

Alison read the article furiously: WEALTHY FAMILY TARGETED BY LOCAL MOB. ALL SPOUSES, CHILDREN, NEXT OF KIN, OR SIGNIFICANT OTHERS WERE SLAUGHTERED ALONG WITH THE FAMILY. THIS WAS BELIEVED TO BE A TURF WAR….

Clenching her chest Alison walked over to her bed and curled up into a ball and sobbed. She sobbed for every spouse, child, kin, and significant other whom, to everyone else, were just circumstance.
