Knowing this book was a YA title, I was comletely taken by surprise by how much I enjoyed it. Silas House has written this story in such a way that anyone - young and old alike - will become absorbed and fall in love with all the characters. With his usual southern charm, he puts you there beside Eli and lets you live his life with him, gently and lovingly carrying you through an innocent yet somewhat troubled summer ~ weaving in family issues we most likely can all relate to. I found it to be a beautiful and stimulating read... a wonderful mixture of emotion, nature, trust and youth. One of my favorites for the year... made all the better knowing it was written by such a beloved, sweet author. It's a keeper - one I can't wait to share with my children and my friends.

How exactly does a person move beyond a childhood filled with death? Death that seems to take form and follow... yet stay in front all the while, taunting with it's ability to control the very life one tries to escape?
This story begins in early 1900's with the death of a young boy's father - and what follows is a not so sweet serial killer mystery in surrounding Georgia country where everyone is suspect and one boy is destined to be haunted - if not hunted - forever.
I'll admit, I do like for stories to move a bit faster than 'Angels' did, but the way this one was told totally captivated me. I was more than impressed with the brillant prose contained on it's pages and there was just enough mystery to keep me guessing most of the way. It was a good story - and the reminder of fashions and placement of historical facts thrown in here and there definitely made you feel as if you were in that era - looking through that young boy's eyes and feeling the harsh life that surrounded him and his townspeople.
The most striking thing about this book, to me, was the way in which it was written - even more than the story itself. The rough, painful - even the morbid scenes - were described in a beautiful fashion. One can only admire someone with such a way with words and want to receive that presentation. I most certainly will be looking for more stories from Ellory.

OK - so you only get to spend so much time with your daughter, right? The ex has moved in with her new man and this summer the kid has a job nearby and is staying with you. GREAT! Til she goes missing. And now it seems she's been lying to you about, well, practically everything ... from her job to who her friends were...
Like most stories along this line, all fingers point to dad - but dad in this story reminds me of Brucey baby in Die Hard. He just is NOT giving up without a fight. (And a good one!) And, of course, the fight he gives makes for a great read. I believe I suspected just about every character in the story as being the bad guy - in one way or another. Nice to be kept guessing... it was also nice to find a page turner that kept me up late and made me skip lunch just to finish it.
After 400 pages of getting to know Mr. Barclay's work, I do believe I'm on a hunt to find more...
What a hoot this story was!
For one full day I felt as if I was living in a small Hungarian village, best friends with a couple of complicated and determined women, associated with a couple of misjudged characters, kicking up the morning dust at market and witnessing capitalism in the making. My only disappointment was when I realized I was on the last page.
Though this could have been a much more serious read, Fitten takes his story and makes it so much fun, you won't be able to put it down. From the young new entrepreneur to the least likely old folks getting their groove on ~ everybody has their own story and their own hilarious, in-your-face way of telling it.
Laugh out loud funny ~ yet sweetly touching... in all the right places. I'll certainly be recommending this one!

WOW! 'Worst Nightmares'... WOW. Let me just say ~ I'm counting the days til I hear about the movie deal as this will surely end up on the big screen. Think 'Misery'... 'Silence of the Lambs'... 'Saw'... all nicely blended, shaken and stirred and served in celebrated fashion.
I was snared at first by the IDEA of the story (and of the story within the story). Then the horrific details in this story kept me up well into the night. But what totally captivated me was the true mystery woven into what turned out to be one of the best thrillers I've read in a long time. Suspenseful? Extremely. Terrifying? That too. But the clincher? Oh now .... I wouldn't spoil that for a ton of money. :)
Fascinating read, Mr. Briant, WELL DONE!
