There are a handful of books that have dramatically changed the way I view the world and forever altered my life. The Shock Doctrine has just skyrocketed to the top of that list. I generally consider myself well informed above the average citizen, but the more I read this book, the more I had to alter my historical understanding of how the world works. Naomi Klein offers a clear, well researched and horrifying analysis of the effects of "free market" ideological obsession over the past 40 years. I was brought near tears on several occasions and trembled with rage at others. The greatest lesson I learned is that the "triumph" free market capitalism (and its conflation with democracy) had nothing to do with the superiority of it as a system but rather to the anti-democratic and abusive methods that have been used to force such injustice upon millions of people across the world.
