bookshelves: classic, i-own, mystery
My first Sherlock Holmes story and I absolutely loved it. This was a quick read, with lots of action and supernatural mystery solving powers! You've got a giant, ghostly, fire-breathing dog that only attacks the Baskervilles and Sherlock and Watson trying to save the day, what's not to love?
I was surprised at how little Sherlock was actually in the story though. He was in the beginning, but then sends Watson off on his own to work on the mystery, and then shows up at the end to solve the whole thing. Is that how these books always work? I'll have to find out by reading lots more of them.
I think the thing I love best about Doyle is that for the era he was writing in, his books are so to the point. He never wanders off on long descriptions of scenery and feelings like so many other writers from the same time period.
Another thing this book has going for it was that characters were just the right amount of smart. There's nothing I hate more than when I'm smarter than the people solving the mystery, but I never was with this book. Whenever there was something I knew that the characters didn't, there was always a good reason for it. This was an excellent read! ]]>

Great book full of herby goodness. Each herb is listed with growing and harvesting tips, uses (traditional, medicinal, etc.), and other odds and ends that are totally interesting. The book also includes several other sections on recipes, beauty products, and crafts that you can use up your herbs with!
Since it's almost Christmas I've been making pommanders (those clove-filled oranges). My mom used to make these with just cloves, but this book suggests putting them in a spice bath while they cure. Now my pommanders are sitting in a delicous bath of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves and my house smells soooo good. ]]>
