I've known about Blindness and the basic premise for ages, but I had no idea how dark and brutal it was. It's pretty dark and brutal, though the imagined government response to a contagious epidemic of blindness is entirely plausible. There's a lot of cruelty, but also a lot of humanity and tenderness, which is probably the point. The language - no punctuation for dialogue, paragraphs that go on for several pages - was challenging at first, but also helped make the graphic misery feel less immediate. At the same time, it also gave the characters a certain remoteness.

I liked this spare little novel. It's about a young haiku poet, and the short chapters and clean, simple sentences all had the feeling of a haiku. The descriptions of the snowy mountains of Japan are very evocative, and the unusual romance between a samurai and a tightrope walker feels like a fairy tale, in a good way. The whole book is like a fairy tale, actually, and I think it's better if you approach it as such instead of expecting realism.
