Philip Roth
First off ... let me just say that for those of you who have read at least a couple of Philip Roth's novels before, there is nothing dramatically new here. However, if you've previously felt a connection with Roth's struggle with meaning of life issues, you will probably enjoy his latest.

Nobody writes as honestly as Philip Roth. Every bit of his dialogue is natural and appropriate for the characters (Ugh, if only Pat Conroy could do this with his novels!). The narration by the main character is simple, direct and effective, allowing the reader to understand the main character in a short period of time, and provides Roth with his opportunities to philosophize on his favorite themes (aging, death, meaning of life, etc).

The novel is short (140 pages; I read it in one sitting), but Roth's narratives are so authentic and precise that you make the connection with the main character very quickly. I believe the main character's loss of the ability to act is an autobiographical reference to Roth's perception that his own abilities are diminishing due to age. There is short, well-written narrative by the main character that addresses the fear of losing ability and endurance as we age. The point is made that although it may take more persistence and effort as your abilities diminish due to aging, the artist is still capable of producing meaningful work. I couldn't help thinking that this was Roth's subtle response to critics that his recent work which has been shrinking in length and has been languishing on issues related to aging and death. This book proves that length does not matter, and that Philip Roth still has much good writing left in him..
