I've been very enthusiastic at the beggining of this book and for the first part of the story, until Severian is forced to leave, I thought it was just amazing. But the problem with this 70s books is that they just can't leave behind the old, dusty taste. I mean some of the authors I read nowadays and say they are influenced by Gene Wolfe, well, I think most of them are quite better themselves (I also think this about Viriconium) . It happens the same with 40s sci fi, it's mostly outdated. Also I have some problems with oniric passages, like the magical garden, I couldn't really get into it... The female characters seemed to me pretty much the same, all of them could be just one. Anyway, I enjoyed the plot and I'll keep on reading. ]]>
