I did enjoy this book, although I agree with another reviewer that the premise of the book leads one to think this could have been funnier. It had a strong start, but goes off in a different direction that sort of left me feeling a bit befuddled. The concept of the citizens of a small, cozy, steadfast in their ways town, touring Rome seems to open up opportunities, but instead the book goes in an odd direction.

Overall, I liked the book, but it left me feeling like something was missing...

Overall, it was a pretty good book with lots of information, twists and turns, and drama. It is a real page turner! I like the setting of Washington, D.C. Dan Brown has the ability to put together so much information, and so much excitement into an artfully told story. I stayed up until 1 am to finish it!

This books dispels some of the myths surrounding the painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The book is created from Michaelangelo's family letters and supporting history. It creates the story of the events surrounding the painting of the fresco, including the physical toll that it took on Michaelangelo. It also touches upon the rivalries and competition between some of the greatest of the Renaissance painters, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, as well as their wealthy and powerful patrons.

On the art side of the story, the author touches upon the fresco techniques used. He also reveals the medical research that Michaelangelo did in order to understand body and muscle structure in order to paint and sculpt. In the book it indicates that Michaelangelo painted humans as nudes first and then clothed them so that the body structure would be perfect.

I think this gives a good interpretation of the internal issues that Michelangelo was dealing as he painted one of the most important treasures in the art world. I think that the author also further explains the political upheaval that was taking place across Europe at a pivotal time in history and religion.

The book is well written and made me look at the fresco in an entirely different way.

I really love this book.
