Almost hopeless story of a Crip who gets away with killing a whole bunch of people but ends up back in prison for assaulting a drug dealer.
I kept waiting for Shakur's moment of revelation in the book...not the one where he realizes that gang fighting is simply destructing his society (which he does have), but the one where he feels remorse, regret and empathy for the murders, assaults and violence he perpetuated.
It never really happens.
Still, Monster is an engrossing and terrifying read, and it left me feeling deeply apprehensive for the thousands of kids that have nowhere else to turn but gangs.
