This was an "Ok" book... It was pretty straight forward with very few twists and turns. Really enjoyed this book. I love the way that fact blurs with fiction in Dan Brown's novels, and The Lost Symbol is no exception. There's enough plot twists and revelations here which keeps the pace flowing. I was slightly concerned that, being set in Washington DC, the book might not feel "as epic" as the previous two Robert Langdon books, and to some extent that is true, but it doesn't take away from the fact that it's a decent story with solid foundations in fact. I've really enjoyed Richard Montanari's recent books, focussing on detectives Kevin Byrne and Jessica Balzano. In fact, this is the first book I’ve read by Montanari that hasn’t featured those characters. The book is a departure in other ways too. The hero of the story, Michael Roman, is a lawyer, rather than a detective which instantly gives him less resources and the relationship between the hero and the story is far more personal. The story feels rather less epic than Montanari’s other novels, but that’s because the story is about one man and his battle to save his family, rather than an escalating serial killer, as per his Byrne/Bolzano books, but it does give Montanari an opportunity to explore a story that transcends continents and involves a different kind of horror.
