This was a hard book to read. Not having read any reviews, I went into it expecting something very different from what I got. I've been thinking about it a lot since finishing it, and I actually like it more than I did after first finishing it.

Rosalee and 62 other people liked Kcatty's review of Clariel (Abhorsen, #4):
Clariel by Garth Nix
"This book was hard to read, but not for the reasons you’re probably thinking of.

Garth Nix’s writing was the best it’s ever been. It’s not my favorite style, but I like it nonetheless. The plot was engaging, the pacing was good – not fantastic, but..." Read more of this review »

My mom got me this book, So I wanted to give it a good try. Generally, my rule is to give a book 50 pages or 5 chapters to grab me. Though some books have a slow start, I feel like that is enough for me to get a feel for if I would like the book or n ...more

“The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say”

Chaim Potok
“Human beings do not live forever, Reuven. We live less than the time it takes to blink an eye, if we measure our lives against eternity. So it may be asked what value is there to a human life. There is so much pain in the world. What does it mean to have to suffer so much if our lives are nothing more than the blink of an eye?

I learned a long time ago, Reuven, that a blink of an eye in itself is nothing. But the eye that blinks, that is something. A span of life is nothing. But the man who lives that span, he is something. He can fill that tiny span with meaning, so its quality is immeasurable though its quantity may be insignificant. Do you understand what I am saying? A man must fill his life with meaning, meaning is not automatically given to life.

It is hard work to fill one's life with meaning. That I do not think you understand yet. A life filled with meaning is worthy of rest. I want to be worthy of rest when I am no longer here.”
Chaim Potok, The Chosen
