I think Ruma's biggest challenge was to not be like her mother (not too different from reality, is it?) Although she does try and conform. Since you've just started the book, let's discuss it once you're done. I wouldn't want to influence the way you read it! But I do think that the conflict Lahiri paints about the father's character, first demanding then not - accepting at times - loving and distant, is well portrayed.
