This book had a little of everything: love, war, family issues, race relations. It was very well-written in a richly descriptive - but not too descriptive - way. AND I learned some (mostly disturbing) things about the Civil War era and how people used to treat one another. Even though I knew the general storyline, there was a good amount of suspense reading this book. Because it's all journal entries or letters among the characters, the language isn't as formal (and forbidding) as you would expect for a book written so long ago.
