I was very disturbed by this book. I can't say I really enjoyed reading it--it was awkward in the manner it was told for one thing. But I haven't stopped thinking about the message since finishing it so I'm quite glad I read it.

Sparingly written, and told from multiple viewpoints. Very emotional.

The style of writing wasn't my favorite, but rates 4 stars because of the insightfulness of the observations.

Even though I've been a fan of Glennon's blog for quite some time, I put off reading her book. I'm not a recovering alcoholic or bulimic, and I mistakenly thought that was what she was writing mostly about. Turns out she is writing about the hardest ...more

Jane Goodall
“Someday we shall look back on this dark era of agriculture and shake our heads. How could we have ever believed that it was a good idea to grow our food with poisons?”
Jane Goodall, Harvest for Hope: A Guide to Mindful Eating

César Chávez
“I became a vegetarian after realizing that animals feel afraid, cold, hungry and unhappy like we do. I feel very deeply about vegetarianism and the animal kingdom. It was my dog Boycott who led me to question the right of humans to eat other sentient beings.”
César Chávez

Gary L. Francione
“Being vegan is easy. Are there social pressures that encourage you to continue to eat, wear, and use animal products? Of course there are. But in a patriarchal, racist, homophobic, and ableist society, there are social pressures to participate and engage in sexism, racism, homophobia, and ableism. At some point, you have to decide who you are and what matters morally to you. And once you decide that you regard victimizing vulnerable nonhumans is not morally acceptable, it is easy to go and stay vegan”
Gary L. Francione
