Glad you have joined our group, Badlydone. We are looking forward to a great discussion here of Emma the novel and the 2009 film, which many of us will see in January in the U.S. Please join us for those discussions for sure!

You have listed some really great authors there on your list. I am just beginning to get into Gaskell, but have loved Elizabeth George for years.

I wondered about a few small details, as you often do when you read historicals. Did the bride herself actually sign a bethrothal agreement, which was done in Matters at Mansfield? It sounded a little dramatic to me, but may have actually been the case in real life.

Dr. believes I have a sinus infection so didn't test for flu. So I take some antibiotic for a couple of days and see how it goes. Thanks for wishing me well.

One area of the story I didn't like was the lack of development of Anne. I guess realistically, if you had lived all your life with the charming Lady C., you wouldn't have much going in the way of drive or determination and I know Anne's helplessness aided the storyline also. But Anne was pretty much an invalid the whole story, injured, upset and tramatized.

I suppose, however, that is why they didn't insist that she travel back home away from all the goings on there at the inn in Mansfield. She did finally claim the person she loved, but she still came out weak to me.

I think Bebris kept them believable too. A lot of what is good about the original characters of Darcy and Elizab. is that they gain a lot of mutual respect for each other. I guess when you start with two really well drawn characters like that, it would be easy to think of them in some different type of plot like a detective story.

Sandybanks wrote: "I have just finished reading. It's pretty enjoyable and I appreciate the writing --- the description of snow-bound London, Scrooge's house etc. But I thought that the story is rather simplistic and..."

I think the story has a lot of realism in it. Do you say it is too sweet because he comes to terms with reality and who he is at the end?

If you think about it one way, you may think it winds up so good in the end -- even so, this man has spent 40 years of his life in greed and selfishness which will never be returned to him, so, at best, I would call it bittersweet.

I haven't really read it all, but it is such an extremely slow-moving book that I must put it down now. I am on page 349 and I haven't found the novel to be fulfilling in any way. And I am normally a lover of very slow-moving novels.

I apologize -- I have seen videos of Kate Morton and she seems very elegant and brilliant and just the type of author I would like. I will try to complete the novel in future and amend my review at that time.

THIS WILL BE LIMITED TO A TWO WEEK DISCUSSION - IT IS THE FIRST OF MANY SUCH DISCUSSIONS I HOPE TO HAVE TO FOSTER INTERACTIONS BETWEEN AUTHORS AND READERS TO ALLOW WRITERS TO EXPLAIN THEIR INDIVIDUAL WRITING STYLES, TECHNIQUES, INSPIRATIONS ECT AND READERS TO BOTH COMMENT AND QUESTION.

Tod is originally from a small town near Fort Wayne, Indiana. While in college, Tod served as an infantryman in the Army National Guard. After college, Tod received a commission as an infantry officer in the regular Army.

Tod and his wife moved seven times over the next fifteen years – his assignments included deployments in support of the war on terror. Tod also served as an infantry company executive officer and patrol leader in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1995 during Operation Uphold Democracy. After September 11th, 2001, Tod served on three combat tours in Iraq. Throughout his career, he traveled to over fifteen countries; many of the cultures were so alien and magnificent that they left a lasting impression upon him. Tod was awarded two Bronze Stars for his service and left the Army at the end of 2007. He continues to provide advice as a consultant to the Army and divides his time between living on the East coast and back in Indiana.

His dream is to spend many more years in his “home office” writing novels that help turn what he has seen and experienced into entertaining and thought-provoking stories for readers of all genres. Prince Kristian's Honor, Book One: the Erinia Saga, is Tod’s first novel. The next book in the series, Ferral's Deathmarch Army, is scheduled for release in the summer of 2010.
POSSIBLE TOPICS
What makes your book unique or different? The market is constantly flooded with new fiction novels ... why would someone want to choose yours?
What is the major plotline?
Are there any secondary plotlines of interest?
Any insights into some of the more nuanced aspects of your story?
(less)
