I do remember the first time I saw/heard of a kindle. It was on The View and Whoopi Goldberg brought it on the show and just raved about it. I immediately got on my computer and looked it up. I bought my K1 in March of 08, and unfortunately paid the $399 for it. 6 week after I got it they reduced the price, too late for me to get anything back, but I think it was defintely worth it. I used to read maybe 6 to 10 books a year. Now I read over 50. I don't think I'll be upgrading on Kindle until they allow us to get DRM books from our library though. Sarah, I don't recall the specific remarks, but the host of the show was making his opening remarks and said something about not mentioning that certain ebook reader, we all know the name...and colum mccann said he wanted to thank all the people that helped make his book including copyright editors, copy people....all the people who lose jobs if ebooks continue. Which I get, but that's life, I live in Detroit and we've all seen what happened with the auto-industry. Also, what you said, they fear the phase-out of the mom & pop bookstores, but again, the Mom & Pop stores are going out of business because they can't compete with the likes of B&N, Borders, Walmart, Amazon etc. It's a shame, but most people I know do not read books in any form, so to alienate a group of people who embrace technology and buy a lot of ebooks is just crazy!!! ]]> http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/117026-connie-s-books-for-2009 Connie made a comment in the 50 Books A Year group:

51) American Salvage by Bonnie Jo Campbell

I liked this book. It is a collection of short-stories. It was nominated for a National Book Award in fiction this year. Bonnie Jo Campbell is a Michigan author and that's why I ultimately decided to read this book. I like how with short-stories, even protagonists with no redeeming qualities are tolerable becuase you only have to read about them for 10 or 20 pages as opposed to 300.
