I am a Kindle owner (K1 - 1st generation early adopter) and I've read over 100 books on the device in the time I've owned it. I am not the kind of person who would usually jump in both feet into the ebook world as I love physical books....but I have to admit that I've fallen in love with my Kindle. I'm already looking to upgrade to a Kindle 2 as they just added PDF and manual rotation (landscape screen) with today's firmware update for the latest gen of their devices.
As for formatting your own books - if you can create basic .html documents (MS Word, Dreamweaver, Frontpage, heck...even Notepad) you can format for the Kindle.
Most ereaders support the .mobi format. Mobipocket offers free desktop reader software and a conversion client that will take .txt, .pdf, .html, .rtf, .doc and many other formats. It will convert them into the .mobi format that the Kindle will read. You can even add your own book covers (images) and meta tag data (author/publisher/etc.) when converting.
Also, there is a great user community supported software package called "calibre" that you can find easily via google. It converts to many different formats and supports a lot of different ereader hardware configurations.
I thought it would be weird reading on a plastic device, but the eInk screen really is just like paper. I actually read The Name of the Wind and Lies of Locke Lamora while on a camping/hiking trip this summer....and I have to say it was much easier finding room in the backpack for a small Kindle than a couple of books. ]]>
