A pretty chilling book about the Mexican Mafia. I came away amazed by how many people can be stabbed 20-30 times in one attack and still survive. Ouch.

Went back to the beginning on this for inspiration on a short pulp western novel I'm working on. Besides Hex being just a great anti-hero as a character, I love that, for the most part, the writing team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray have kept these stories as one shots. You can buy an issue and get the whole thing in one sitting. I love longer arcs, but it is also nice to see self-contained stories, perfect for a trip to the bathroom or for killing that time waiting for the spouse to get out of the shower. That may seem like a simple thing to pull off, but it isn't. Especially coming from DC (same could be said about Marvel), who can't seem to let anyone do self-contained stories that aren't tied to some huge, issue-crossing world changing saga.

It's got strippers, sex, drugs, and rock n . . . er, mostly country music. And that's one of the things I loved about it! The fact that this book, by an Australian writer, references so much of the country music from my collection (Steve Earle, Vanessa Williams, Johnny Cash, et al) made it damn fun. And a scene toward the end where all these bar/strip club dwellers convene at an outside barbecue in broad daylight and how odd they look to the protagonist -- classic! And so true! A fun read. I hope THE OUTFIT puts out the rest of Ms. Redhead's books.

Great, fast moving crime story with a very deft switch of point-of-view mid-book. A fine read, and a great offering from an indie publisher (Busted Flush Press, Houston, TX).

This book is equal parts adventure book, natural history book, and book about running and an extreme sport. I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Makes me want to go run about 500 miles.

This is a solid book with a lot of excellent information about writing, without spending a lot of time about the mechanics of it. It's a little dry, but not so much that reading it was a slog. Good for anyone trying to make a go at freelancing in anything artistic, I would think.
