Good book overall since this was required reading for my sophomore English class in high school. At first I couldn't understand the philosophy behind the story, but it paints a very vivid description of Socialist Communism from an animals perspective. Very well-written, especially the descriptions of the setting (in central California). However, even I did find the language somewhat graphic (and what's surprising was that this book was published in 1937!) but with that aside, the story is moving and poignant. The only thing I find confusing was that there was no mention of the verse that the title was excerpted from (it was shown at the beginning of the movie, though). And the ending didn't provide any resolution like the movie did. Still, I plan to read more of Steinbeck's works just to understand his unique writing style.
