The concepts in this book are great, but I think you can pick it up in the first few chapters. It talks about how exercise impacts your emotions, hormones, aging and learning capacity. I was really inspired by the book to try to use short exercise stints to wake me up and increase my alertness. Knowing that working out in the morning has the potential to help me perform better during the day is a much more motivating reason to get out of the bed than some ellusive goal of a trimmer waist line. ...less

Before the Communist party took control of China, Bette Lord's family left China to spend a year in the United States. Someone else on Good Reads who read this book said that it is a borderline romance novel, but she still throughly enjoyed it. I have to agree. It does have substance, however, as a work of historical fiction. In the late 1800s many people in China were struggling with the introduction of foreign ideas into China. It is the beginning of a divide that will have much greater implications. Through this novel we see this unfold in the lives of three generations of a wealthy family. I think it is loosely based on the history of the author's family....less

There are many things that are shocking about this book. I have read a few books in which the Rape of Nanking is the backdrop of a fictional tale, but nothing prepares you for the true horrors that occur. The author does an excellent job of presenting the events and highlights some of the unexpected heroes that rose up and risked their lives to save others. The most intriguing is a former leader in the Nazi party. According to the author bio, the author, who did not live through the events in Nanking, suffered from sever depression and eventually killed herself. After producing such a poignant piece of work, I can't help but feel her death was equally tragic. Before reading this book, I recommend reading The Girl Who Played Go and The Devil of Nanking....less
