<span id="freeTextreview_rating15007936" style="display:none" class="reviewText">This is a very interesting read. I had the 4th Edition and literally wore it out. The 5th Edition is the most recent from Robert Young Pelton. Robert's travels across the globe have brought him to some rather interesting, and in some cases outright dangerous, places and, believe me, all the bad places are in here. Robert gives a first person's perspective of some of the scariest, war torn, corrupt and brutal places such as Chechnya, Israel/Palestine, Liberia and even the United States, but does so with a touch of humanity and a sense of humor. This is not a book of opinion, it's pretty much fact. Coming from one who has spent time in all of the countries he's listed in his book, it's hard to dispute.<br/>It offers you a peek into a world which is far away from the malls and buffets we are lucky to enjoy. It's fun, but at the same time a sad documentery on the state of the world. You'll see through Robert's words, that there is still a lot of hatred, sadness, disease, slavery, crime and violence still out there. <br/>This book is filled with information and facts as well as not so common sense tips on what to do should you find yourself traveling to... Well, anywhere really.  <br/>Yes it's a brutally honest book, but there are some good points. Robert lists several global aid orginizations and includes ways to contact them. Ellis which was the WINNER of the 1997 - National Book Awards.  Bruce Staples in his review wrote: <em>The biographies of Jefferson already are legion. But Joseph J. Ellis's ''American Sphinx'' is a brief and elegant return to Monticello. Mr. Ellis, a professor of history at Mount Holyoke College, is a remarkably clear writer, mercifully free of both the groveling and the spirit of attack that have dominated the subject in the past. <br/><br/>As a biographer of John Adams, he is well suited to this mission. Adams was Jefferson's predecessor in the White House, his bitter rival in his middle years and his confidant toward the end, when both became aware of what the union and their friendship would mean for posterity. <br/><br/>''American Sphinx'' is fresh and uncluttered but rich in historical context. <br/><br/>Mr. Ellis reminds us that Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence while still a foppish young man with limited political skill. He was congenitally shy about speaking in public, even while the Continental Congress debated and edited his prized declaration.
