This was a fun departure from some of the other genres I tend to stick to. Green is a competent writer who knows how to craft a story rich in detail and heavy on imagination.
At first I was taken aback by what I thought were rude stereotypes of immigrant workers in Texas, but after the first two or three chapters, I was sucked in by the pop culture references (Lifetime TV), a handsome but not perfect hero type and the highly hypocritical jet set.
Green lets us have fun, offers adventure and conjures up just enough compassion to let readers know that nobody's perfect, even those who want to do the right thing.
Fun, fast reading for all.

Just wrapped up "The Shack" after reading so many reviews in the mainstream press. As a Christian (although Young's characters take issue with religious systems, per se) I liked it and would recommend it.
It was a out-of-the-ordinary read that raises questions about religion and spirituality, redemption and responsibilities, and the whole "what is God like" issue.
There are no easy answers coming from Young, but what readers will get is a thought-provoking experience that forces one to re-examine how they interpret God's will, who Jesus was and what the Holy Spirit is like.
Truth be told, much of the dialogue left me lost at times, only to find its way back to me in terms I could understand. Interestingly enough, though, I found the afterword of the book---Young's account of how "The Shack" came to be---more interesting than the book itself.
