Romanticised highwayman Dick Turpin is famous for his legendary ride from London to York in a single night, which killed his horse Black Bess. This incident is fictional, invented by a romantic Victorian novelist or in a ballad or something, but it gives an idea of how extraordinary such a feat would have been. Not impossible but highly, highly unlikely.

My impression has always been that Katherine, ahem, educated herself with the music teacher and Francis Dereham without needing any help from the top brass of the family. If I remember rightly she considered herself Dereham's wife, which would make perfect sense to me - she was an insignificant member of the Howard family so she wouldn't have expected a great match and she might well have rather naively gone through some sort of secret marriage with a handsome lad she'd fallen in love with and hoped to get away with it.

I can never see the point of historical fiction if it doesn't even try to be historical.
