I'm sorry, but I have to say that this is the cheesiest book I've ever read, even for a romance. First it is laughably unbelievable. I don't think that two people would stay pen pals for 17 years and never meeet. I also don't see how two people could fall in love even though they only saw each other a few days twice a year.Then there is the dialogue. Marybeth is talking about how she doesn't know what feeling turned on feels like (again, how could a twenty-something be so naive?) and the guy she is with is practically talking in clinical terms. Seriously, parts of this book almost made me laugh out loud--and not in a good way. Additionally, I could see the ending coming from a mile away. I give this one a D+. ]]>

This is a fictionalized account of Laura Bush's life.The book is divided into 3 main sections, starting when the main character, Alice, is in high school, and ends while her husband is serving his term as president. What I liked about this book was that it helped to really humanize these characters, who is real life appearto be so elevated above us "normal" people.My complaints about the book: First, the book skips over his presidential campaign. I was expecting that to be a big part of the book, so I was disappointed that it was skipped. Secondly, (and I suppose this was intentional) there was an aura of sadness in the narrator's voice throughout the entire novel. Even though it was a good book, I couldn't get excited about reading it because it just made me feel depressed, hence the mediocre rating. All in all, not bad and made me curious as to how many fictional liberties that Sittenfeld took. Either way, I definitely feel a newfound sense of compassion and empathy for Laura Bush. I give it a B-. ]]>
