His essay on John Updike's book "Toward the End of Time" ("Certainly The End of Something or Other, One Would Sort of Have to Think") simultaneously made me laugh, understand why I will never read another Phillip Roth book, saved me tremendous amounts of time in hours I will not spend reading Updike, and made me feel like if I'd ever met Wallace, we might have been friends. ]]>
