Still suggests that it was not the absence of ship-building facilities that doomed the Confederate Navy or a lack of foundries, iron works or armament works. It was a lack of ability to get the iron and coal out of the ground fast enough and a lack of rolling stock to move resources and finished materials around. The success of the Union blockade forced the Confederates to disperse their facities and place them as far inland as possible...which led to further logistics and transportation problems....less

I bought this book at a bookstore on Canal St. in New Orleans and read it while doing survey work around Vicksburg. We crossed the Yazoo River everyday on the way to work around where the C.S.S. Arkansas fought the U.S.S. Carondelet, Tyler and the Ellet Ram Queen of the West. It helped that the book is pretty good too....less

The title of this book is a translation of the Italian tanker's motto during WWII. Like many things associated with Fascist Italy and Il Duce during this period it is a bit camp and over the top. Walker in this book attempts to correct a prevalent problem with most histories dealing with the war in North Africa. While Italian forces made up 80% of the axis forces they are rarely mentioned in the epic clash between Monty's Desert Rats and Rommel's Afrika Korps. Easy read, technical without being dry, poor maps....less

Eugene de Beauharnais was Napoleon's stepson by Josephine. The viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy, Eugene was the only one of Napoleon's top commanders to receive any type of formal instruction from l'Empereur. This book deals with how Eugene utilized that training during the 1809 campaign vs. Austria. Good military history, decent maps and orders of battle. There is not a ton of material out there for the Kingdom of Italy during the Napoleonic period. ...less

It is easy to view the Ancient Egyptians as ancient versions of ourselves: modern westerners without color TV or cars and with an unusual fixation for building pyramids.
